day one was a subtraction

The earliest entry in this stretch of the record carries the previous day's date, and it does one thing: it reduces the working tree to sources and excludes generated output by rule. Before any question had been opened, the operation decided what its history would not carry.

That decision is nearly free on the first day and nearly impossible on any later one. A repository that starts lean never pays for it; one that starts heavy spends its life moving material around, and the expense is not the space, it is that generated output is indistinguishable from work to anyone who was not present when it was written. It is one of only two entries in this stretch whose subject is the shape of the record itself rather than the state of a question.

The tension is absent on day one, and that absence is the opportunity. Reproducibility argues for keeping everything you produced; legibility argues for keeping only what someone will read. On the first day nobody can claim harm from the legibility side, and the argument that holds the line later has to be written down then, because afterwards the pressure is always in the other direction. Without a rule in place, the first large output would have been committed by default, and a record becomes its defaults.

What it cost was a rule that will occasionally remove something a person wants, with no appeal except rebuilding it. What it proves is that the operation chose the weight of its own history while it still had no history to carry, which is the only moment that choice is genuinely free.

Every note carries a codename and one idea. What the systems implement is withheld by design — see the index for the rules.
