the checking lane lands like the work
Among the lanes reconciled in this record is one whose remit was not producing results but exercising the machinery — the checking apparatus itself, run as a lane with a label, a state and a schedule. Its integrations go through the same path as everyone else's: reconciled on the same beat, landed the same way, indistinguishable in form from the lanes doing research.
That uniformity is the decision. A check that lives outside the record cannot be cited. Scripts in someone's working copy, a run that one participant remembers, a number reported in conversation: none of these can be inspected later, and a body of work cannot claim to be checkable on their strength. Putting the checking apparatus under the same protocol as the work means the thing doing the checking has a history like everything else, and a later reader can see which version of the check gated which claim.
On any throughput measure this lane is pure overhead. It produces nothing that reads as a result, it consumes reconciliation capacity, and when it fails the visible effect is somebody else's summary arriving late. The temptation is to let it run informally — the checks pass, everyone knows — which is precisely the arrangement in which nobody can tell afterwards whether the check that once gated a claim is still the check in the tree.
What it proves is that verification was treated as part of the body of work rather than as an environment the work happened to run in, which is the difference between having checks and being able to point at them.
